Leadership Lesson: The biggest leadership lesson that I have learned over these past months is the ability to realize when you need to encourage others to take initiative and giving credit to those who do not often receive it. As an extrovert, I am usually very passionate and will quickly step up when there is a task at hand. Understanding that leaders also have to realize when they need to step back and let others shine is something that Delta has allowed me to learn. Additionally, Delta has taught me to give credit when due especially to those who usually fly under the radar.

Leadership lesson: For two years, I was in my sorority’s philanthropy committee as the alumnae and family relations chair and then website chair. By working with my peers and friends to manage events and new initiatives, I learned about my personal leadership styles. It takes practice to work out your strengths and through your weaknesses, so being surrounded by a team is crucial.

Ranked eighth in her class of more than 1,000 cadets, Katie Miller was a model student at the U.S. Military Academy. But under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law that prohibited gay men and women from serving the country openly and freely, Miller felt she was living untruthfully. She could not keep quiet and had to speak out. The truth came out in 2010, when she announced her resignation from West Point — and her sexuality — on live television.
