Nicki Minaj fires back at NY Times Magazine writer mid-interview

Minaj is the focus of a NY Times Magazine exposé published Wednesday by Vanessa Grigoriadis. At the end of the piece Grigoriadis makes the mistake of asking Minaj if she “thrives on drama” in relation to the Drake-Meek Mill feud. Minaj promptly shuts this down and then does what any disrespected person would do in that situation.

12 Badass Women to Celebrate on Aviation Day

Even today, the skies remain male-dominated. By the end of 2013, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, women still only made up 6.6 percent of pilots worldwide.

Today, August 19, is National Aviation Day in the United States. In honor of this celebration, here are 12 women pioneers who have inspired generations of aviators.

  1. An actress, writer, and photojournalist, Harriet Quimby became the first American woman to earn a pilot’s license and cross the English Channel.

  2. A woman of African American descent wasn’t allowed to earn a pilot’s license in the United States, so Bessie Coleman went to France and became the first African American of any gender to earn her international pilot’s license in 1921.

  3. The first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic? Why Amelia Earhart, of course.

  4. Another Amelia Earhart (no relation) flew around the world and landed successfully in Oakland, California, on June 11, 2014, ending a journey that she hoped would inspire female aviators.

  5. We also honor the American first woman to go into space, Sally Ride. “We remember Sally Ride not just as a national hero, but as a role model to generations of young women,” said President Barack Obama upon Ride’s death in 2012.

Drake and Peggy Olson, together at last

Now, thanks to the internet, you can watch Drake’s admittedly amazing hustle anthem being put to the most perfect use imaginable, as a soundtrack to Olson’s rise to the top. Bravo, internet.

Happy moon landing day! July 20, 2015 marks the 46th anniversary of Apollo 11’s arrival on the moon. The software for the guidance computer was written by a team at the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory (now the Draper Laboratory), headed up by Margaret Hamilton.

Hamilton’s code was good — so good, in fact, that it very well might have saved the entire Apollo 11 mission. The rendezvous radar (the radar system to be used when leaving the moon and reconnecting with the control module) and the computer-aided guidance system in the lunar module used incompatible power supplies. The radar, which didn’t really have a purpose in the landing portion of the mission, started sending the computer lots and lots of data based on random electrical noise. This overloaded the computer and threatened to leave no room for the computational tasks necessary for landing.

And that’s what would have happened if Hamilton hadn’t been a baller. Being a baller, she anticipated this kind of problem and made the Apollo operating system robust against it.

Women athletes are proving over and over again that #LikeAGirl means amazing things.

One key player to thank for that?

Title IX.

Title IX was passed by Congress in 1972. The law prohibits federally funded educational institutions from discriminating against students or employees based on sex.

By strengthening women’s collegiate athletic programs, Title IX has helped women compete on an equal playing field with men. But there’s more work to be done. The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup made it clear that expanded opportunities for female athletes have not translated into greater gender equity throughout the professional sports world.

You can help. Learn more and become a Title IX activist.

This Geologist Was So #DistractinglySexy She Was Forced to Sit Behind A Screen

AAUW member Florence Bascom (1862-1945) was the first woman admitted to graduate school at johnshopkinsuniversity. Once there, she was forced to sit behind a screen so as not to “disrupt” male students.

Bascom went on to become to first U.S. woman to receive a doctorate in #geology and the first woman officer of the United States Geological Survey. She also established the geology department at brynmawrcollegeadmissions, which turned out more women geologists in the early 20th century than any other U.S. institution.

As Olympic medalist #CaitlynJenner embraces her newly public identity as a trans woman, these wise words said this week by #NCCWSL15 Woman of Distinction Amanda Simpson couldn’t be more apropos.

Currently the executive director of the U.S. Army Office of Energy Initiatives, Simpson is both a trailblazer for women in #STEM as well as the first openly transgender woman presidential appointee.
