Laura says: Baseball is and was always my favorite sport. When the time came to sign me up for Little League, I was devastated to learn that I had to play softball because I was a girl. I wanted to play baseball just like my dad. Eventually, after some coaxing, I grew to love softball and I’m looking forward to playing on a team for fun this spring.

Suzanne says: This was 1979, the first season of the very first girls’ softball league formed in East Northport, NY. Our team was called the Rainbows. Previously in our town, girls could only play baseball in the ‘boys’ league’. This was a big moment as I recall. I love the team picture especially; I think we look very proud.

Marie says: I was a softball player and cheerleader all through my high school years. It was a strange combination compared to most of my friends, but I enjoyed both immensely and never desired to pick one over the other. When I was with my softball team, I was perceived as quite bubbly and girly, while my fellow cheerleaders were more likely to notice that I had a tomboy streak. The stereotypes and alternate characteristics may have messed with me as I went through those tumultuous adolescent years of identity searching, but I truly loved getting to explore, express and embrace all the sides of being a young woman in high school.
